Magical Realism With an Authentic Voice

My love of magical realism has been part of my reading and writing life long before I knew the genre had a name. When I was a little girl, I used to sit on a stool in my grandmother’s kitchen and watch her cook. While she chopped, stirred, and made the best biscuits in the world, she would tell stories about ghosts—haints, she called them.


Rebecca D. Elswick is the daughter and granddaughter of coal miners, and lives in southwestern Virginia. Mama’s Shoes, her debut novel, was published in 2011, and No Stopping Her, her first young adult novella, was published in 2015. She holds an MFA in Creative Writing from West Virginia Wesleyan College.
